This dark read introduces a world where magical beings called Daimons and witches must reluctantly live under the noses of the other but they don't have to like it. Carnival of Souls switches between the points-of-vies of Mallory, Kaleb, Aya, and a few other side characters. Each character's point-of-view switch coincides with a chapter change so it isn't confusing. Mallory unknowingly finds herself caught in between the human world where she lives with her father, a witch, and is raised to hate Daimons. However, her father has not been altogether truthful with Mallory about her history with the Daimons.

The Daimons have a strict class system. Many Daimons are limited to the class they were born into. But one fight-to-the-death tournament allows one Daimon to climb to the top of the class system. Both Caleb and Aya join. Caleb joins because he is poor and needs to protect his friend and packmate, Zevi. Aya becomes the first woman to enter the tournament and surprises everyone because she is already of a higher social class. She enters the tournament to protect her secrets with surprising results. She'll do anything to protect herself even if it means betwaying those she loves most. Soon the characters find themselves connected in unexpected ways and must navigate the changing world.

On the story...
I enjoyed this read and found it to be surprisingly gritty at times. Ms. Marr is great at creating a unique premise that draws the reader in. There were a few twists and turns that kept me interested. I enjoyed the colorful characters and the intrigue. On one hand this story was great because it unveiled many secrets that added depth to the premise. But on the other hand, the story ended just as the action began. There's tons of build up but little resolution. I've been getting mixed information on whether this is a series or if there will be a sequel of some sort. If there is another book after, I'd feel that this book was a nice prequel to real action and questions. If there is no sequel then I'd be much more disappointed with this read since very little was tied up and explained.

On the narrator...
James Marsters did a good job. This was my first time with this narrator and thought he did a great job with both the female and male voices. I'd definitely listen to this narrator again.

Overall, I found this well-written read to be both exciting, engaging, and disappointing at the same time. I'd have appreciated a little more action and less set-up.

This is the first book I have read for Melissa Marr and I love it. I started with the sneek peek and ended up buying the book a day later, which I read in one sitting. Really enjoyed it.
The story line is good, the characters are original and the writing style is fine.
My only complaint is that the book felt too short. Why must writers always do series?
This is one of those books that could have been spectacular if written differently. The world that Marr creates is terrific - as are some of the characters. The writing, however, is clunky. I'm not such a wonderful writer myself that I feel qualified to say what is wrong with the book, but somewhere around 2/3 through I simply lost interest and started skimming. It does say something about the quality of the world and characters that I'll probably seek out any sequels to the book to see what happens - but I won't buy them. Best to check this one out from the library if you are on a budget.
This book is absolutely, positively amazing. The world that Melissa Marr has built is dark, magical, gritty, sexy, suspenseful, mysterious...give me my Thesaurus baby, I could go on & on!

This novel is my first experience with witches & daimons. All in all, Ms Marr gives a nice kind of interwoven layer of helpful information to the layperson like me without (I'm thinking anyway..) being insulting to someone who's an avid reader of this kind of book. I really feel like I got to know the characters pretty intimately & not only did I develop a real interest in & affection for the main characters like Aya, Mallory, & Kaleb, but I felt some degree of empathy for those perceived to be primarily evil & self-serving, ie Adam, Evelyn. So kudos again, Ms Marr for writing these multi-faceted characters!

I'm only wishing that I would have discovered this novel a few years down the road so that I'd be able to move right along to the next in the series. The waiting is the worst...! )
I grew up reading the Wiked Lovely series, and still return to Melissa Marr's page from time to time just in case she's got something for me to read. I didn't love this as much as her other series, but it was definitely a very good book. It has been a while since I've read a book and still thought about it a day later, wondering what's going to happen in the next book.

I really enjoyed the plot and the world she created, however I'm pretty sure Melissa Marr is much better at writing than this. Like Aya's relationship with Belias, I wish we had more of a back story on that, but instead we're just told what happened in the past. I didn't think I got a feel for what the characters looked like either. Come to think of it, I'm really not sure what the world looked like either. I think it would really help her story a lot if she SHOWED us a little more.

One of my favorite parts, is that the love interests are the same age! I love that! I hate stories (like twilight) where a 100 or more year old guy falls madly in love with a teenager. That's so creepy!

Other than that, I did like the main character. She's kind of immature, but not so much in that I don't like her. I love the character of Adam, he's Mallory's father. You're never really sure if he's a good guy or a bad guy and I love that. Most of the characters are unique in that way, that there's more to them than what meets the eye.

I really hope she writes a sequel, the ending seems to imply there is going to be a sequel. I can't wait to hear what happens to Mallory, Aya, and all the other characters. I really hope she goes into more detail in the sequel, and brings her characters a little more to life.

I would certainly recommend this book and any other book by Melissa Marr to anybody who enjoys a quick fantasy read.
