I first read this historical novel as a teenager, and my current reading of it (50 years later) did not disappoint. My motivation was based in large part on David McCullough's thoroughly engrossing biography, "John Adams" (2001) -- I was surprised to learn that Adams read "The Scottish Chiefs" during his retirement and enjoyed it very much. How "connected" I felt to our 2nd President, and on this very personal level! Also, if all you know about William Wallace comes from Mel Gibson's "Braveheart" (1995), there is more to learn from Jane Porter's novel. There were, of course, the wonderful illustrations by N. C. Wyeth -- completely transporting to this long-ago time and place.Product details

Extremely well written, descriptive, and a challenge to almost anyone's vocabulary. For obvious reasons, I liked the book because it's hero is Sir William Wallace and because I dearly love Scotland (which shall always be above England). Also, I was able to see where certain parts of the book were selected to be included in the movie, "Braveheart." I suspect that Jane Porter did her homework and that "Scottish Chiefs" is far more accurate; after all, isn't this book known as an Historical Novel?
This book is the quintessential historical romantic novel of Scotland. It should be savored, enjoyed, and experienced. Although not entirely historical, it should be enjoyed for the classic it truly is.
This is a historical novel, a fictional book about a historical person and events. Sir William Wallace was a real life hero of the Scottish people and the battles, honors and his execution along with a lot of the circumstances in this book really happened. Miss Porter in writing this opened up the world of the struggle for freedom of the Scots in the late 1200s and 1300s. She satisfactorily invented plots and people and times (and especially the ending of the book) because there seems to be very little actual factual information about William Wallace in existence even today. She takes the reader from life in the peaceful times to the bitter battles and struggles that the people of those years faced everyday. She portrayed King Edward I (Longshanks) as the despot he really was.
I love the book, and as a romantic, I really liked the ending. The ending sounds possible but not probable. That's all I'm saying about the end.
Miss Porter writes very well, in my opinion, and has a good word picture flow through the chapters and the insertion of her book's content into the real times and events was/is believable and entertaining. She depicted the economic times and the wishy-washy characters of a lot of the nobles of that era - "do whatever you must to keep your nobility and holdings", in a most human way. I think any first time reader should enjoy it and could be as engrossed in it as I was. I literally read this book in about a week. For the number of pages, 504, of the book and the lack of speed with which I read, that is really moving for me. For me it was an "I can't put this book down". Give it a reading.
Scottish Chiefs is the story from which the movie Braveheart was taken. It is the incredible story of William Wallace who led Scotland in war against the oppression of England. Most have seen Braveheart and have been moved by his passion and ultimately his sacrafice, but his life was the most moving part of this story, to me. He is one of the best examples of the faithful Christian heart ever portrayed. His honor, intregrity, and faithfulness overshadow his bravery. He was a Christian warrior fighting for freedom, armed with Christian virtue and purpose. Jane Porter wrote this book a couple of centurys ago, but it's message is for today. A must read for all patriots.

William Wallace in Braveheart lived in a hovel and was dirt poor; in real life he was a wealthy nobleman with unquenchable passion. The real man accomplished much more than the movie depicts and many of those accomplishments were far more heroic and tragic. If you want the truth, it's been painstakingly uncovered in this book written centuries ago. It's a book worth reading.
We owned a version of The Scottish Chiefs by Jane Porter and wanted to give on as a gift. Unfortunately, I didn't pay enough attention to the details. This is a large size book with small print and it is laid out rather strangely. The story, however, will still be good, just harder to read.
I got this book and had it read in a week fron beginning to end and all that aloud to my husband, its amazing I have a voice left. I have procrastinated writing my review because it is overwhelming to write a review of something we liked so much! This is the book that white knights come from and heros and heroic acts are embodied. Delightful, intense, rich, exciting, sad, happy, romantic, moral...its all there and a little history to boot (not extremely historically accurate, but there is always lots of controversy over legend, history, biased accounts etc). Enjoy the book as a wonderful read and be inspired by the praiseworthy heros and heroins it builds.
The copy is very nice and the illustrations by NC Wyeth very good. Recommend!
