People with intellectual disabilities are virtually absent from American history.
Why? Where are their voices? Why institutions? Why eugenics? Are things getting better? What is the future? These and other issues are addressed as well as commentary on the history of the US, exclusion and steps to gain real membership in the American dream.

... fine point to many of the thoughts I have had after reading books like The War Against the Weak. A great book highlighting the founding ideals, and moments of American history. It then ties the goals, hopes, and aspirations of the disability community to our society's in such a way that I wish I was still teaching Political Science, because this would definitely be a recommended read. We must understand well where we have been to seek out a path that directs us productively to where we are going, and to understand just how much we have to lose.Product details

Here to Stay Americans with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities edition by Michael T Bailey Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
I have my signed copy of my dear friend, Michael Bailey's book. I am humbled by his intelligence, insights, knowledge of history, and respect for the subject. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities have always had something to say. Michael has listened. If you have ever encountered one of these individuals and thought, "There is a person of value. What is it like to be inside their head?" This book is for you! Thank you, Michael for bringing this offering to the world.
Michael Bailey has written an absorbing book that is quite simply a must read for anyone working in social justice today - and really, for anyone interested in expanding their worldview about who is and is not part (historically and today) of the American society and the American dream.
Written in an accessible but often urgent manner, Bailey's book blows the roof off misunderstandings and myths about the lived experiences of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities - and he pulls no punches.
You want to understand an often hidden and dark corner of American history and civil rights struggle? Read this book. Read it now.
Through this book, Michael Bailey has forced me to come to terms with what I've known for years Our civil rights are only assigned to us by the wielders of power. If you identify outside the parameters of a white, straight, and male you aren't born with rights, they're assigned to you. If you have a disability you're forced to wait even longer to be assigned your rights. Mr. Bailey walks us through the 250 years of the fights for civil rights, but we are reminded that the fight is by no means over. Bailey reminds us that the time to listen to those affected by our social power structure is now, but its been that time since the beginning. People with disabilities don't need our help, they need us to get out of their way.
This is an interesting and invaluable book from a parent, advocate, attorney and chronicler of human rights (and my friend and colleague in the disability/human rights movement). Interesting and invaluable because of the focus on who has been excluded throughout American history from the origins of the U.S. (pretty much everyone) and because of the focus on the development of self-advocacy. Some, like me, may have some difficulty wading through the plethora of typos, and the fact that a good chunk of what was intended to be in this book stories from self-advocates themselves, had to be excluded because of contractual limitations. These stories are another book of about 180 pages and well worth reading because they show what we all should know those with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not only here to stay but have always been here and have hopes, desires, fears, frustrations, loves, losses, and triumphs--just like everyone else does—and feel them just as strongly. Two snippets from the stories that were forcibly excluded from the print book (but that are available from the author upon individual request) One person says something like some say I have Down syndrome, but I think I have chocolate syndrome. I loved this because I identify with it. Then there are these poetic lines from a person talking their life "The author of this book is/Unpredictable./And that’s what makes the book/Worth reading." I know of no other book like it and recommend all those interested in this topic read it.
I just started reading this book and cannot put it down! I had to take a break to share it with everyone. Michael Bailey has produced a book that everyone with disabilities and professionals in the disability community should read.
"Two strains of ugly that run too frequently through the professional community and hovers around people with IDD. The first of those is the habit of underestimating people. The other is a sort of proprietary sense of 'my self-advocates'" ("Self Advocate" is a term often used in the disability community to describe an individual with disabilities)
This quote resonated with me because of the sadness I feel when people with intellectual and developmental disabilities introduce themselves by telling me who their service provider is. Example "Hello, I'm James from XYZ services." People with disabilities deserve an identity outside of their service provider and its not going to happen with out doing something about it.
Great Book. serves real people with disabilities very well. Thank you Michael Bailey.
To be fair, I must confess to being a friend of Michael. That said, this book is an important addition to the story of the history of folks with disabilities (which is sadly, much too limited a genre). It is written simply and accessibly, rich with information, and full of heart. Ignore the few grammatical errors and typos--it's about the message!
