Phoenix Mark Dawson 9781546593546 Books Reviews

I'm a big fan of John Milton but hadn't delved into Beatrix Rose. When author Mark Dawson announced his effort to help a close friend with cancer by writing this novella, I was immediately on board. Cross-over characters have become a big deal in the superhero genre and also in the thriller world, and I've enjoyed them. In this particular case, I thoroughly enjoyed the novella even though it felt a bit rushed at times. It's a story that could easily have greater development, and perhaps Mark will do more cross-overs with his fine characters. Regardless, the book is worth the price as is, and knowing that the proceeds will benefit a deserving cause makes it all the sweeter. So, don't delay. Buy it now.
In Phoenix, Mark Dawson brings together a slew of favorite characters (including those you love to hate) in a masterful novella that slips between the stories of his Beatrix Rose and John Milton full-length novels. Though Milton and Rose fans will eat up the merging of these two hard-hitting, crazy-smart-and-gritty-beyond-belief characters, Phoenix still holds its own as a stand-alone piece for anyone not yet familiar with Milton and Rose. With some great twists and surprises, Mark Dawson provides the action, wit and intelligence readers hope for with the teaming of these two characters to keep new readers and old fans coming back for more. If you're new to John Milton and Beatrix Rose, Phoenix is a great place to start. If you're already a fan, Phoenix is the the start of what we've all dreamed of Team Milton and Rose v. The Bad Guys.
Dawson continues to show why he remains one of the top writers of this genre. With a collective 20 books in this multi-character series, you might think that the writing might be getting stale or formulaic. Nothing could be further from the truth. This current installment, written specifically (and without fees) for a friend in need of funding for expensive medical treatment, is even tighter than usual. There is an economy to his writing; nothing is wasted. This story, a prequel to all of the Milton/Beatrix/Isabella novels, begins in a fairly dry/lighted story and quickly accelerates. I have read all of Mark's work, and I didn't see the ending coming. Bravo! A standing ovation for you.
I bought this book because the proceeds go to help a young mother fighting cancer. Typically, I don't buy or read a lot of genre fiction. I'm a voracious reader of non-fiction, though.

However, we recently went on vacation, and I had some extra time to read while traveling. I opened this up, and I'm glad I did. It was excellent! I found it full of page-turning suspense. Most of all, I found it interesting and entertaining, and that's what a good book should be.

The main characters engaged my interest. The book centers around Beatrix Rose, but she also works with another mysterious agent named John Milton. The two paired up on a mission to pursue and capture a scientist who fled from a top secret government program.

The pace was quick, the suspense woven throughout, and it was a quick and fun read. I'll definitely be recommending this book series to my friends, and I look forward to reading more about Beatrix Rose and John Milton.
I am quickly running out of superlative adjectives with which to describe my enjoyment of Mark Dawson's ability to write thrillers! This novella starts immediately with the essential points of the story, thus there is no need to read through pages and pages of introductory material as you wait for the story to become interesting. Dawson earns high points from me for this fact alone. Beatrix and John Milton meet for the first time in Venezuela and go on what is supposed to be a rather simple mission find and abduct a former Russian scientist, question him, and if at all possible get him back to England. Things quickly turn deadly after they capture the scientist and begin questioning him. In the ensuing ambush and running gun battle with who-knows-who, the scientist is gravely wounded and dies without divulging much of value. While racing from building to building in an effort to fight off the attackers, Beatrix stumbles upon a woman with a small child. She has to kill the woman in self-defense and now feels responsible for the child's welfare. Beatrix and Milton split up and return separately to England, she with the child. Beatrix and her infertile husband assume the duties of parenthood and name the child...(wait for it...Isabella Rose!!). Considering the violent life Beatrix and Isabella will face in the next 10-14 years, I found this highly charged moment of mother/daughter initial meeting to be entirely appropriate. If you have followed their adventures through Dawson's creative way with the written word, I believe you will agree a more conventional description would not be nearly as good a fit with the storyline.
