I. Love. This. Book.In my review of Ashbless’s excellent novel Summer Seduction, I wrote about her amazing sex scenes, her flawed, fascinating, believable characters, and her gleeful disregard of romance novel troupes.
Well, Cover Him With Darkness has all that times one million.
This novel tells the story of Milja, the daughter of a village priest in Serbia. There’s a cave beneath their small, mountainside church, and in that cave there’s a naked, chained prisoner who looks like a man but most certainly is not…
Think you know where this is going?
Trust me, you don’t.
Cover Him With Darkness is one hell of a wild, sexy ride. This book has more twists than a corkscrew, and none of them felt artificial.
Ashbless takes us from the high mountains of central Europe to Boston to Burning Man, and she’s such an excellent writer that I truly mean “takes us.” I could feel the sand of the Nevada desert beneath bare feet and the chop of the waves on the Mediterranean. To say nothing of the intense, erotic, and imaginative sex…
And somewhere along the way, between the dozens of plot twists and the Kindle-melting erotica, this novel raises some enormous questions: What does it mean to love someone? What loyalty do we owe family, tradition, and the pull of our own hearts? How shall we balance compassion with justice?
Damn, if Dostoevsky wrote smolderingly hot erotica about fallen angels, he’d be Janine Ashbless.
This sexy story twisted my preconceptions so much that, by the time the most infamous Fallen Angel made his presence known, I wasn’t even certain which side I was rooting for.
But one thing is damn sure.
I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

Thrilled to find this dark series from talented author Janine Ashbless. Fabulous world building, descriptive prose, and fantastic story. Highly recommend this series!
Excellent writing style, engaging storyline. Was not as dark or erotic as I had expected (or prefer in my reads) but absolutely loved this book. Would have liked to have seen a bit more erotic, romantic development between Azazel/Milja; would have liked another 50-80 pages in the book 😉. Adored Azazel's deep, emotional and completely misunderstood character. I loved how the author depicted and questioned our normal stereotypes of "good-vs-evil". Overall outstanding read, only wish the book were a bit longer.
This is thought provoking in mixing truth and fiction. I absolutely loved the characters. Milja is a contradiction of determination and uncertainty. I believe her issue is that she looks at Azazel as a human guy that is easy to decipher. However he is a complex being with so many facets that it is hard to figure out. I hope she can have a HEA.
Also very brutal in parts. A good story though, well written but a few small typos the editor missed where a word wasn't taken out. I really liked how you could almost feel what the MC was feeling I this book and the question s she had to ask herself. I don't know what I'd have done in her place. Wow what a conundrum. I'd have also felt awful for what they did to him and feel it was wrong so yea I may have let him go. Anyways a really good story, with no real boring parts and It read pretty fast.
I just finished the three books within a couple of days. Worth the time invested. Great mix of sex, religion, dogma, secrets, violence, spirituality, and the big three (faith, hope and charity/love)....in other words - Life. A Divine Comedy mixed with drama. Not the laugh out loud type, but rather a grim chuckle. If you like you sex cerebral and well written and you mix the big three with realism and intellect, you will enjoy this read. Lots of twists and "I did not see that coming (pun intended)". Full of heros and anti-heros - larger than life and human sized.
Watchers are angels tasked with keeping an eye on the human race , but ended up taking human females as wives and producing Nephillim, (half human/half angel) children who wreaked havoc when grown up. A war ensued between heaven's angels and the Watchers with the Watchers on the losing side. They are labeled Fallen and restrained on slabs of rock , hidden underground for 5000 years. In all that time no one had set a Fallen free until Milja. Now she has Heaven's Archangels and Earth's religious leaders after her and Azazel. Good and evil aren't simply black and white whether they be fallen angels, archangels, priests, or even a helpful kind stranger. Ironically Watchers need the human touch of emotions to keep them alive, hence the use of human guards all these centuries to prolong their torment and not have them die. Milja holds a lot of power over Azazel merely with her love which in turn puts her in danger. Azazel isn't human and I like that the author remembers that and the way he thinks and acts keeps that true to his being. The book has an ending , but leaves it open to a sequel .
Amazing! This author can really write. Being raised a Roman Catholic and now being a born again pagan this book brought back all of the memories and reasons that I left the Catholic church. I would like to know how any WASP's reading this felt. My doctor is Serbian and Orthodox Catholic so this story intrigued me even more because of that.
This book raises the questions "What is good?" and "What is evil?" This story will have you thinking one thing and turn it around and have you believe another. This book is so intense, had life not gotten in the way I could have read it in a day. I love a book that teaches me things about a location or country like this book did. It had me going to Google Earth to check out the country and terrain. This author uses words that I am unfamiliar with and I love that as well.
I would love to see this book made into a movie. The CGI and special effects would be so incredible to see. This book can be read as a standalone but the end leaves you wondering what might happen next. I have so many books in my TBR but I really want to read the other two books in this trilogy ASAP. The entire trilogy is written in 1st person from Milja's POV.
I. Love. This. Book.
