To protect what little family she has left, Lady Catrin Fitzalan switches places with her cousin when King Edward orders the pious girl to wed his royal champion, a vicious knight called the King’s Raven. Rumors abound that this savage is responsible for the deaths of Lady Catrin’s father and brother. How can she allow her sweet cousin to wed a murderer?

Bran ap Madog, bastard son of a Welsh prince, has devoted his life to serving the English king. His badge is the raven, a creature that feeds off rotting spoils, just as Bran feeds off the spoils of war. Now he wants a reward for his service a wealthy wife and the land and power she can bring him.

But there’s another side to the rapacious black birds Bran has chosen for his badge. Social and family-oriented, ravens mate for life. Which gives them something Bran never had—a family, a sense of belonging, and a rightful place in the world. Bran has fought for everything he’s ever had. But his last battle, with his new wife, may cost him the one thing he isn’t prepared to lose his heart.

I couldn't finish this book. Maybe I'll pick it up again.

The story and the characters, even the murder mysteries, seemed contrived. The writing style is simplistic, almost to a fault, and the author never really drew me into the story or the world.

As a ward of the King, I understand the heroine has limited choices. But what she and her cousin contrive to solve the mystery that begins in the book is a bit far fetched. As if no one would realize they've switched? Like they wouldn't know the soft, quiet, pious mouse changed places with her fiery tempered, outspoken cousin who can't seem to hold her tongue worth her life? They aren't exactly educated in the middle ages but they aren't blind.

The minute the heroine thought switching would be a good idea was when I rolled my eyes and put the book down. I really thought it was unnecessary because 1) she's going to get found out, 2) it's not a good idea to go into a relationship based on a lie 3) she could have sacrificed herself for her family if she was just up front with the Raven and said, "Take me instead. I love my cousin too much to give her to an ogre." The Raven liked her enough from the beginning to probably do it.

I'm sure this book promises some steamy events and life shattering romance but I just couldn't get far enough to know.

My Lord Raven Knights of the Royal Household edition by Jan Scarbrough Romance eBooks Reviews

Good
At first it seemed original and had my attention, but once the heroine arrived at "her" keep it started to smack of lots of other medieval romances that I've read. I was hoping since this character was the king's champion there would be more pomp and pageantry. I was hoping that more knights would challenge him throughout the book, or that there would be more scenes at court with the king and their intrigues. You don't even get to see the main villian get his just desserts, which after sticking it out throughout the whole book you at least want to see the king sentence him or something. You just heard about his punishment kind of off to the side in the Epilogue. It just didn't feel like it truly ended.
Sir Bran ap Madog, the Raven, knight to King Edward meets Gilbert, twin brother to Lady Catrin Fitzalan, at a tournament where Gilbert fights unfairly and attempts to kill the Raven; his life is spared by the Raven but later during the tournament he is found dead and suspicions by some, including Lady Catrin, shift to Sir Bran. Now alone with no male relatives, Catrin realizes she is a ward of the king and will have a husband selected for her. At the same time, Sir Bran is offered a reward of lands by the king for his service to Edward; among the lands and wives offered is Catrin; he refuses Catrin due to suspicions surrounding him in regard to her brother and father's deaths. Instead, he accepts the offer of Catrin's cousin, Olwen, who does not want to wed but seeks to be a nun. Catrin is mistaken by Sir Bran for Olwen but she does not tell him her true identity; she sees this as opportunity to seek revenge for her brother's death and thus proceeds with her charade.
Book jumped from situation to situation without any real depth to characters, very boring read. Who would be turned on by a look merely minutes after someone you loved was killed? Weird
I usually like all books, but this one, from page one until almost the conclusion was NEGATIVE. The main character was negative and negative and negative, until I finally said, Can't she find anything good to say." Needless to say, I didn't care for it, which is rare for me.
A young woman takes her cousin's place in marriage to the king's knight The Raven. Hoping to find evidence that he murdered her father and brother, she finds herself in a dangerous position when she is attacked and almost dies. Fa!!ing in love was not the plan. Can she save her husband from an angry king? Hoping the truth will be revealed will keep you enthralled to the end.
This author’s medieval romance tales exhibit a thorough knowledge of life in medieval times, full of descriptions of the fragility of life in those times, the whims of royalty, and how the heart will always find a way to find its soul mate despite the difficulties and feuds involved. Ms. Scarbrough writes with passion and empathy for her hero and heroine, and this tale of Bran and Catrin is an exciting one. I just couldn’t stop reading about these two until I “helped” them reach their happy ever after…and I recommend it highly.
